AND State Boards In Suspicious Activity

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) is really playing dirty. This presently includes the states of North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Ohio, and New York. This article does point out that states that do not have the legislation passed in the form desired by AND are doing much better that the states that have passed the legislation when nutrition is discussed. In other words, if you want to have your state ranked among the obese states, pass the stupid legislation.

The article does have fun with what the state of Colorado said about the AND legislation. If “AND were correct and the lack of regulation of nutrition endangers the public safety, then Colorado should be the epicenter of harm—yet it seems the reverse is true. In fact, in a 2007 letter, the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies rebuked the Colorado Dietetic Association, which was at the time seeking an RD monopoly law, for failing to provide any evidence of harm caused by the unlicensed practice of nutrition professionals.”

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is attempting to become a monopoly in every state and limit their competition or put them out of business. This is a harm for everyone and limits our choice of whom we can seek for nutrition advice. The Alliance for Natural Health (ANH) did the research and obtained copies under the freedom of information act of the activities on four of the states where the state AND boards have been the most active.

Currently, only twenty-four states have restrictive nutrition counseling laws. Fortunately, most states recognize the licensure has nothing to do with protecting the public health, and has everything to do with market share (creating a monopoly). You should review the map below to determine where you state is involved in this and then consider talking seriously with you state legislators to modify the law or repeal the law.

While I cannot support the ANH in 100 percent of what they advocate, in this endeavor, they have my support. You will need to decide your position and take action that you see reasonable for you.

Health Care Confusion Causing Potential Scams

The confusion surrounding the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare, is generating many scams and people are falling victims to some of the scammers.

First, Medicare or the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will not call people about obtaining insurance. They will send something in the mail if they want to contact you.

Second, the enrollment period does not start until October 1, 2013 so any calls received now are not authorized.

Third, never give out personal information over the telephone. This is not necessary and you must protect this information.

Two articles that should help you may be read here (this notice is from the state of Ohio) and has excellent pointers in it. The second article is from the Dallas News and warns readers about some of the scams being done on seniors.

Please remember that enrollment is not until October 1, 2013 and you will receive notification in the US Postal Mail. This alone tells you that you need to ignore phone calls about insurance.

Blog Being Reactivated

I had not intended to do this, but I have so many topics that are not about diabetes per se but can often be linked. My interests are being expanded to areas that I have not done topics on before or have and I am looking for space to add them. As such, this blog will serve as an overflow for topics that may not be diabetes specific.

Please let me know if a topic appeals to you. My email address is on my profile page and I do like hearing from people. Questions I will do my best to answer and comments are welcome. I will keep this to a maximum of five days per week and hopefully bring this blog down to five days per week. This will depend on my spirits and how blogging remains enjoyable for me.

This Blog Is Stopping

Sorry folks, but posting to two blogs is more than I can handle now.  So for the future, I will leave this blog in place, but I doubt that I will add to it.  I am even cutting this blog to five days per week and some weeks it may be less, but the intention is to do five blogs there per week.

LCT breaking new ground in cell therapies

Rather than reprinting the newsletter, I will direct you to it and let your read it. Living Cell Technologies is fast out pacing the rest of the world in cell therapies for diabetes and may soon have products in Japan, China, and other countries.

The biggest plus is the lack of need for the use of any immunosuppression. As a person with type 2 diabetes, this is still very exciting news and especially for those that are type 1 and hypoglycemically unaware.

I am posting this on both of my blogs.

Suggestions for World Diabetes Day - P2

When I wrote my original blog of suggestions for World Diabetes Day, I never imagined the feedback I would receive. I expected some objections to my wanting to cancel some building lighting, but this did not seem to bother most people.

To date, I have received one tentative support email that said the USA was not ready for this yet. Two people seemed very much identical in their thoughts about where I should put my suggestions – in a place where the sun doesn't shine. Two other emails had other ideas and that we should worry about our own people in need of diabetes supplies before helping people outside this country.

The sixth email bothers me the most. It used language that is not printable and some that I have not heard since the days before Martin Luther King. This talk reminded me of a few types of individuals dishonorably discharged from the military for their racial hatred and white supremacy views. I did not like it then, and I don't like it now.

So for putting the suggestions out in a blog, I had not expected this type of opposition and feelings, but so be it. That we have this type of people in the USA is not a surprise and even that they are so selfish and self-centered. That they would email me is also not a surprise as I asked for them, and I am very sure they used temporary email addresses to avoid return emails as those I have sent did not go and returned error messages.

Six emails and no comments until August 8, tells me what people think and feel about IDF and helping them. A sad feeling for me. I can only do so much as one individual, but I will do it just the same. I am more encouraged now after a few comments from others in the DOC.

Since writing this I have had two other emails, while not totally positive, were somewhat encouraging, but doubted that with the current economy there would be much support for organizations like the IDF or even ADA after receiving the email from the ADA expressing so much fear for what was going to happen to those receiving Medicare and Medicaid.
